The history of the DC-9 began with design studies in 1958. The Douglas Aircraft Company wanted a smaller jet to complement their large DC-8. On April 8, 1963, the company officially approved the DC-9 project. The first DC-9-10 production model flew on February 25, 1965. It received its type certificate on November 23, 1965. Delta Air Lines became the first operator on December 8, 1965. In 1967, Douglas merged with McDonnell Aircraft to form McDonnell Douglas. This merger helped manage the financial burdens of aircraft production.

Production numbers for the DC-9 family are quite impressive. The company delivered 976 original DC-9 aircraft before stopping in October 1982. This success led to the development of the second generation, known as the MD-80 series. The MD-80 was a lengthened version of the DC-9-50. It featured a larger wing and a higher maximum takeoff weight. The third generation was the MD-90, which arrived in the early 1990s. This version used V2500 high-bypass turbofan engines. The final version was the MD-95, which became the Boeing 717. In total, 2,441 units of the entire family were produced.

Even decades after their introduction, these aircraft remain significant. As of August 2022, 250 aircraft from the family were still in service. This included 31 DC-9 freighters and 116 MD-80 freighters. There were also 103 Boeing 717s flying as passenger planes. The MD-90 was unique because it was retired without being converted to freighters. The DC-9 family competed against famous planes like the Boeing 737 and the Fokker F28. By May 1976, Douglas had delivered 726 aircraft. This was more than double the number of its nearest competitor at that time.

The legacy of the DC-9 connects to modern aviation in several ways. The design influenced subsequent generations of aircraft like the MD-80 and MD-90. Even the Chinese Comac ARJ21 is derived from the DC-9 family. The aircraft demonstrated how a well-designed jet could grow through different versions.
