He was born Herbert Arthur Chamberlayne Blyth in Amritsar, India. His father worked as a surveyor for the British East India Company. Maurice eventually moved to the United States to find a new life. He became the patriarch of a very famous acting family. His children, Lionel, Ethel, and John, all became successful actors themselves. People remember him as a man who brought talent to the stage.

Before he was a star, Maurice was a very skilled athlete. He studied law at Oxford University in England. While there, he was the captain of the football team. He also became a champion boxer. In March 1872, he won the middleweight boxing championship of England. He even had many friends who were famous wrestlers and boxers. This strength stayed with him throughout his entire life.

Maurice chose his stage name to protect his family's feelings. He wanted to act, but his father expected him to be a lawyer. To avoid causing his father shame, he used the name Maurice Barrymore. He chose this name after seeing a poster for an actor named William Barrymore. He also wanted his first name to sound French. His friends often called him "Barry" to keep things simple.

His life in America was full of big moments and changes.

In 1901, he had a sudden breakdown while performing on stage. He was taken to a hospital to receive medical care. His daughter Ethel worked hard to help pay for his care. Maurice died in 1905 in Amityville, New York. He lived long enough to see all three of his children begin their own acting careers.
