Matteo Messina Denaro was a major leader in the Cosa Nostra. This is a powerful criminal organization in Italy. He was born on April 26, 1962, in Castelvetrano, Sicily. His father, Francesco Messina Denaro, was also a Mafia boss. Matteo grew up in this world and learned to use a gun by age 14. He eventually became a central figure in the Italian underworld.

Denaro's rise to power happened through several stages. After his father died in November 1998, Matteo became the boss of his local area. He controlled Castelvetrano and several neighboring cities. In 2001, he took over leadership in the province of Trapani. He reorganized the 20 Mafia families there into one single group. This group, called a mandamento, became a very strong part of the Cosa Nostra. This region is often called the "solid pedestal" of the organization.

His leadership style was very different from previous bosses. Older leaders like Salvatore Riina and Bernardo Provenzano followed conservative family values. Denaro was known as a "ruthless playboy." He lived a fast life with expensive tastes. He drove Porsche sports cars and wore Rolex watches. He also wore designer clothes from brands like Armani and Versace. Even in his free time, he was known to be an avid player of computer games.

In the early 1990s, Denaro played a major role in a violent campaign. This campaign was a strategy to force the Italian state to retreat. He and other leaders met to plan attacks using bombs. These attacks happened in several major Italian cities. They hit Florence, Milan, and Rome. These bombings killed 10 people and injured 93 others. They even caused damage to important cultural sites like the Uffizi Gallery.

Following these attacks, Denaro became a fugitive in June 1993. He spent thirty years living on the run from the law. He used fake names to hide his identity. For example, he used the name "Matteo Cracolici" while vacationing in Greece. He was placed on the most wanted list by the Italian Ministry of the Interior. In 2010, Forbes Magazine listed him as one of the ten most wanted criminals in the world. He even used the nickname "Diabolik" after a comic book character.

As other leaders were arrested, Denaro's importance grew. Bernardo Provenzano was arrested on April 11, 2006. Salvatore Lo Piccolo was arrested in November 2007. After these arrests, Denaro was seen as the unchallenged boss. He had many connections to international criminal networks. Investigators found he had interests in Venezuela and links to drug traffickers in Colombia. His networks also reached into Belgium and Germany. He maintained strong ties to Mafia families in Palermo through his relatives.

His long period as a fugitive finally ended in 2023. On January 16, 2023, police arrested him near a private clinic in Palermo. He was using a false name because he was undergoing chemotherapy. He had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Denaro died in a prison hospital on September 25, 2023. He fell into an irreversible coma before passing away at age 61.
