She was born between the years 1102 and 1110. Matilda was the only child of Count Eustace III of Boulogne and Mary of Scotland. Because of her family, she inherited many important lands. She was the countess of Boulogne in her own right starting in 1125. Her lands included the French County of Boulogne and many estates in England.

These lands were very important for trade across the sea.

Matilda’s life changed when she married Stephen of Blois. King Henry I arranged this marriage to help bring families together.

When King Henry died in 1135, Stephen took the throne of England. This made Matilda the queen of England in 1136. However, a difficult time called the Anarchy began soon after. This was a civil war between Stephen and his cousin, Empress Matilda. The two cousins fought to see who would truly rule the land. The country was split between supporters of the king and the empress.

Queen Matilda was a very active leader during this war. She did not just stay in a palace. In 1138, she joined her husband to fight a rebellion. She led a large army to a successful siege at Dover.

She also acted as a diplomat to make peace. She worked with King David I of Scotland and King Louis VII of France. When King Stephen was captured at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, Matilda took charge. She began assembling an army to fight for her husband's rights.

Queen Matilda was also very successful in battle. The empress had taken control of London and seemed ready to win. However, the queen allied with the people of the city. She led her army to retake the capital city.

Later, she besieged the empress at Winchester. During this time, she captured the earl of Gloucester. This was a huge blow to the empress's war effort. By the end of 1141, Matilda traded her prisoner to get her husband back.
