It serves as a vital center for the nation's science, research, and industry. As of 2019, it was the largest and most populous province in Poland. Its total population reached approximately 5,411,446 people. The region is highly developed and possesses a very high income level. It also maintains the lowest unemployment rate in the entire country. This combination of economic strength and cultural history makes it a key part of the Polish state.

The province is organized into a complex administrative system. It is divided into 42 counties, known as powiats. These include five city counties and 37 land counties. These counties are further subdivided into 314 gminas, which are municipalities. Some of these are urban gminas, while others are rural. The government is led by a governor, or voivode, who is appointed by the Polish Prime Minister. A marshal also assists in managing the executive duties of the province. The provincial assembly, called the Sejmik, consists of 51 members who help make decisions.

Warsaw is the most significant city in the voivodeship. It sits in the center of the Warsaw metropolitan area. The capital has a population of about 1.783 million people. Other major cities include Radom to the south and Płock to the west. Siedlce is located in the east, while Ostrołęka sits to the north. These cities act as important hubs for the surrounding land counties. The province borders six other Polish provinces, including Warmian-Masurian to the north and Lublin to the southeast.

The history of this region is deeply connected to the Polish people. In the Early Middle Ages, a tribe called the Masovians lived on this territory. Płock served as the capital of Poland from 1079 to 1138. Today, visitors can see the Wzgórze Tumskie, or Cathedral Hill, in Płock. This site contains the Płock Castle and a historic Catholic Cathedral. The cathedral was established in 1075 and holds the sarcophagi of several Polish monarchs. Later, the capital moved from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596 under King Sigismund III Vasa.

Masovia has also experienced very difficult periods of conflict. During the late 18th and 19th centuries, the region saw several uprisings against foreign rule. These included the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794 and the January Uprising of 1863–1864. The region also faced devastation during World War II under German occupation. The occupiers committed many atrocities against Polish and Jewish populations. They operated several prisons and forced labour camps in the area. Most notably, the Treblinka extermination camp was located here, where 700,000 to 900,000 people were murdered.

Nature provides a beautiful contrast to the busy urban centers. More than 20% of the province is covered by forests. These woods consist mainly of pine and oak trees. The Kampinos National Park is a very important natural site. It is recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Within this park, one might find animals like the moose. There are also nine other landscape parks located throughout the voivodeship. These green spaces make the province a popular destination for tourists who enjoy the outdoors.

Modern infrastructure makes the Masovian Voivodeship highly accessible. Several major international road routes pass through the province. The A2 highway runs from west to east, connecting the region to Germany and Belarus. The S7 expressway runs north to south through Warsaw. The region also boasts three of the ten busiest railway stations in Poland. These are Warszawa Centralna, Warszawa Wschodnia, and Warszawa Zachodnia.

Additionally, the Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport serves as a primary international gateway. This connectivity supports the province's massive economic output, which was 596 billion PLN in 2021.
