Mary had a very busy way of working. She often wrote in a small, cozy cottage near her father's house.

She and her sons turned this little place into a comfy "den." She worked hard from morning until night to finish her books. Sometimes she would make up stories as "good-night stories" for her boys. She would read them the tales as she was creating them. This helped her make the stories feel very real and fun. She even checked her work with experts to make sure it was right.

Mary's life changed when she was a young woman. She was born in New York City on January 26, 1831. Her father, James Jay Mapes, was a famous farmer. Mary did not go to a regular school like many children. Instead, teachers came to her home to teach her. She learned French, drawing, music, and Latin at home. In 1851, she married a lawyer named William Dodge. They had two sons named James and Harrington. Later, Mary had to work very hard to earn money for her sons' education.

Mary wrote many wonderful books and articles. Her first book was called The Irvington Stories in 1864.

Her most famous book was Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates. It was published in 1865 and was a huge success. People loved it so much they translated it into many languages. It was turned into Dutch, French, German, Russian, and Italian. The French Academy even gave her a prize of 1,500 francs for it. She also wrote books like Rhymes and Jingles in 1874.

Mary's work connects to the stories we read today. She helped make children's magazines a very important part of life. Because of her, many great authors shared their talents with young readers. She showed that writing could be both a job and a way to help a family. Her stories about the Netherlands helped children learn about new places. Even today, people remember her for her great imagination. She made the world of books a much brighter place for everyone.
