Mary was a very strong person. Her father did not want her to be an artist. He would not even pay for her art supplies. She even lost some paintings in the Great Chicago Fire. Still, she did not give up. She became friends with the artist Edgar Degas. He invited her to show her work with the Impressionists. Mary was the only American in that group. She also helped many people in America learn to love this new style of art.
