Mary Berenson was a significant American art historian of the 20th century. She is best known for her deep expertise in the Italian Renaissance. Berenson's professional life involved teaching, writing, and hosting. She conducted lecture tours across the United States during the first decade of the 1900s. These tours were very important for the art market. They helped wealthy American collectors develop an interest in Italian Renaissance art. She also worked closely with her husband, Bernard Berenson, in Italy. Together, they managed a home called Villa I Tatti.

Her work often happened behind the scenes of famous publications. In 1894, a book titled *The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance* was released. Although the book carried Bernard Berenson's name, Mary is believed to have helped substantially with the writing. This was a common occurrence in her career. Her own mother reportedly asked that Mary not take credit for this specific work. This highlights the complex way she contributed to the field of art history.

Mary's personal history was full of connections to famous intellectual circles. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1864 to Robert Pearsall Smith and Hannah Whitall Smith. She studied at the Harvard Annex, which is now known as Radcliffe College, from 1884 to 1885. Her first marriage was to an Irish barrister named Benjamin "Frank" Conn Costelloe in 1885. This marriage eventually led her family to move to England in 1888. She and Costelloe had two daughters, Ray Strachey and Karin Stephen.

Through her daughters, Mary became part of the famous Bloomsbury Group. This was a group of influential English artists and literary figures. Karin Stephen married Adrian Stephen, who was the brother of the writer Virginia Woolf. Ray Strachey married Oliver Strachey, the brother of Lytton Strachey. These family ties placed Mary at the heart of a major cultural movement.

As a hostess, Mary managed a very high-profile social circle at Villa I Tatti. She helped develop the gardens at this estate. The home hosted many celebrated personalities of the era. Guests included the writer Edith Wharton and the writer Gertrude Stein. Other famous visitors included John Maynard Keynes and Isabella Stewart Gardner. The Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio also visited the villa. By 1927, Mary decided she was tired of entertaining. She handed the responsibility of hosting over to the couple's librarian, Elizabeth Mariano.

Her later years were marked by significant personal challenges. By 1935, Mary had become largely an invalid due to ongoing illness. In 1940, her eldest daughter died following complications from surgery. During this time, Bernard was left under Fascist regulations because he was Jewish. Mary remained at Villa I Tatti until her death in 1945. Her life remains a study of how women shaped the study of art, even when their names were not always on the covers of books.
