Martyna Majok is a famous American playwright who writes stories for the stage. A playwright is a person who creates the scripts for plays. She was born in Bytom, Poland, but moved to the United States as a child. She grew up in a multicultural neighborhood in New Jersey. This area was full of immigrant families who worked hard. Many people there held jobs cleaning houses or working in factories. These real-life experiences help shape the stories she tells today.

Majok’s writing style is very special and unique. She often writes about people who are not always seen in big stories. This includes immigrants, the working class, and people with disabilities. Her plays explore deep feelings like loneliness and the need to connect with others. Even when the topics are tough, she uses dark humor to show life. Her characters are often strong women fighting for their dignity. She likes to use workshops to build her plays with other artists.

Her journey into theater started with a big moment when she was seventeen. She went to see a production of Cabaret at Studio 54. She used forty-five dollars she won from playing pool to buy her ticket. Later, she studied drama at the University of Chicago. She also attended the Yale School of Drama and the Juilliard School. To pay for her life, she worked as a waitress and a caregiver. These jobs helped her understand the people she writes about.

Many of her plays have won huge awards and reached many people. Her play Ironbound came out in 2014 and was about an immigrant woman. It won the 2016 Helen Hayes Charles McArthur Award. Another major success was her play Cost of Living in 2016. This play explores how people with and without disabilities interact. It won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which is a very big honor. Her play Queens tells stories of women living in New York.

Majok continues to create new and exciting things for the theater. She is even adapting the famous book The Great Gatsby into a musical. This new version features music by Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett. Her work travels all over the world to different cities. Plays by Majok have been performed in London, Toronto, and even Poland. She helps us see the world through the eyes of many different people. Her stories remind us how much we need one another.
