One major project was the Third Cambridge Catalogue of Radio Sources, or 3C, in 1959. This catalogue helped scientists discover the first quasi-stellar object, known as a quasar. Using his improved equipment, Ryle also observed the most distant galaxies known at that time. These discoveries changed how we map the structure of the universe.

His scientific achievements earned him the highest honors in the world. In 1974, Ryle and Antony Hewish shared the Nobel Prize in Physics. This was a historic moment for the field. It was the first Nobel Prize ever awarded for astronomical research. He also received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1964. Other awards included the Hughes Medal and the Royal Medal. These honors recognized his massive impact on physics and astronomy.
