He spent decades portraying a vast array of characters on film and television. His career was marked by significant transformations, ranging from master spies to historical figures. Landau was not just a performer; he was a dedicated leader in the acting community. He served as an executive director at the Actors Studio for many years. He also headed the Hollywood branch of the Studio until his death in July 2017.

Landau's path to stardom began with a unique professional background. Born on June 20, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Morris and Selma Landau. Before pursuing acting, he worked as an editorial cartoonist for the New York Daily News. He spent five years helping to produce the comic strip "The Gumps." At age 22, he made the decisive choice to leave the newspaper industry. He told his editor he was moving into the theater to focus on his craft.

To master his profession, Landau underwent rigorous training at the Actors Studio. In 1955, he was one of only two applicants accepted out of 500 people. During this period, he studied under legendary instructors like Lee Strasberg, Elia Kazan, and Harold Clurman. He also formed a close friendship with fellow actor James Dean. They spent their time discussing the future of acting in a changing modern world. This foundational training allowed him to develop the deep, dimensional roles that later defined his career.

His early film and television work helped him rise to prominence during the late 1950s and 1960s. He made a major appearance in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 film "North by Northwest."

In the mid-1960s, he achieved television stardom as Rollin Hand in "Mission: Impossible." This role was technically demanding because it required him to master various accents. He often played multiple characters within a single episode through impersonations. He earned three consecutive Emmy Award nominations for this specific performance.

Following his success on "Mission: Impossible," Landau focused heavily on television roles. He appeared in the British science fiction series "Space: 1999" during the mid-1970s.

He also made guest appearances in popular shows like "Columbo," appearing alongside Peter Falk. While he worked in various low-budget genre films, his reputation as a skilled character actor remained strong. This period of steady work prepared him for a major career resurgence in the late 1980s.

Landau's late career was defined by critical acclaim and major industry honors. In 1988, he earned an Academy Award nomination for "Tucker: The Man and His Dream." He also received a nomination for his role in Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" in 1989. His most celebrated achievement came in 1994 when he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He won this Oscar for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi in the film "Ed Wood."

For this role, he also won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

His preparation for the role of Bela Lugosi demonstrated his deep commitment to realism. Landau researched the part by watching old films featuring the real Lugosi. He carefully studied the specific Hungarian accent that had influenced Lugosi's later career. Landau viewed the performance as a "love letter" to the man he portrayed. He wanted to use his own career comeback to provide Lugosi with a professional opportunity he never had. This dedication to the truth of a character remained a hallmark of his work until the end of his life.
