She lived with her siblings, Mary and Lazarus. Her name has deep linguistic roots. It is a Latin transliteration of the Koine Greek name Marthe. This name comes from the Aramaic word Mârtâ. In Aramaic, this means "the mistress" or "the lady."

This title suggests she held a position of authority or responsibility in her household.

The New Testament presents Martha through several distinct roles. In the Gospel of Luke, she is shown as a busy hostess. She is described as being "encumbered about many things" while serving guests. In contrast, her sister Mary chooses to sit at Jesus's feet to listen to his teachings.

This creates a famous comparison between active service and contemplative listening. In the Gospel of John, Martha is portrayed with more depth. She is shown as an active participant in major events. She meets Jesus immediately when he arrives at her home. This shows her proactive and direct personality.

One of the most famous accounts involves the death of her brother, Lazarus. When Jesus arrives, Martha and Mary both express grief. They tell Jesus that if he had been there, their brother would not have died. Martha's interaction with Jesus is described as a moment of teaching and faith.

Even when she worries about the odor from the tomb, she engages in a deep conversation about hope. Jesus tells her that faith will allow her to see the glory of God. Following this, Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb, and he returns to life. This event highlights Martha's role as a witness to a major miracle.

Historical and scholarly discussions often focus on the location of Martha's home. The Gospel of John places the family in Bethany. However, some scholars note that the Gospel of Luke does not name a specific town. Some suggest the family may have lived in Galilee, possibly near Magdala.

There is also debate regarding the identity of Mary. In Western traditions, Mary of Bethany was sometimes equated with Mary Magdalene. However, Pope Francis clarified in 2021 that these are two different individuals. This distinction helps historians and theologians understand the specific people mentioned in the texts.

Different religious traditions offer unique perspectives on Martha's life after the biblical accounts. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Martha is considered one of the Myrrh-bearing Women. These women were present at the tomb following the crucifixion of Jesus. They were the first to witness the Resurrection.

Other traditions suggest Martha and her siblings fled Jerusalem due to persecution. Some accounts say they traveled to Cyprus. In these stories, Lazarus became the first Bishop of Kittim, which is modern-day Larnaca. All three siblings are said to have died in Cyprus.

A popular legend from the 13th-century "Golden Legend" tells a different story. This tradition claims Martha traveled to Provence in France around AD 48. It says she, Mary, and Lazarus traveled on a ship without sails, oars, or a rudder.

They eventually arrived in Marseille and worked to convert the local people to their faith. This legend portrays Martha as a person of great speech and grace. It has influenced how she is depicted in European art and folklore for centuries.

Today, Martha is a widely venerated figure across many Christian denominations. She is recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. The Lutheran and Anglican communities also commemorate her.

Her feast day in the Roman Catholic Church is July 29. This date is shared with Mary and Lazarus. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, her feast is celebrated on June 4. Because of her history of service, she is often viewed as a symbol of strength and common sense. This legacy is seen in the many churches and shrines named in her honor globally.
