Messier's career was defined by his exceptional leadership and ability to win championships. He is the only player in history to captain two different teams to a Stanley Cup victory. He won five championships as a member of the Edmonton Oilers. He led the New York Rangers to their first title in 54 years in 1994. Because of his impact during that specific era, fans gave him the nickname "The Messiah."

His path to professional hockey began in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada. His father, Doug Messier, was a hockey player and a coach who mentored him. In 1976, Mark joined the Spruce Grove Mets of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). He was only 15 years old at the time, which was below the usual age limit. He later played for the St. Albert Saints and the Portland Winterhawks. Before entering the NHL, he played professionally for the Indianapolis Racers and the Cincinnati Stingers in the WHA.

In 1979, the NHL absorbed several WHA teams during a major merger. The Edmonton Oilers selected Messier in the third round of the 1979 NHL entry draft. He spent much of his early success with the Oilers, where he became a dominant force. In 1984, he switched positions from left-wing to centre during the playoffs. This move helped the Oilers defeat the New York Islanders to win the Stanley Cup. During that postseason, he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the most valuable player.

He was selected for the NHL All-Star Game sixteen different times. Messier also won the Hart Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the league's most valuable player, in 1990 and 1992. His 1990 win was decided by only two votes, the narrowest margin in the history of the award.

One of his most famous moments occurred during the 1994 playoffs with the New York Rangers. Facing the New Jersey Devils, Messier publicly guaranteed a victory in Game 6. He backed up this claim by scoring a "natural hat trick" in the third period. A natural hat trick occurs when a player scores three goals in a single period without anyone else scoring in between. This performance helped the Rangers win the series and eventually the Stanley Cup.
