A marine chronometer is a very precise clock.

Sailors carry these clocks on ships. They use them to find their position at sea. This is called celestial navigation. This means using stars or the sun to find your way.

To find longitude, sailors need to know the time at a fixed place. They compare that time to the local time on the ship. Because the Earth rotates, the time difference shows their location.

Old clocks used pendulums. But pendulums do not work on a rocking ship. The waves make them swing the wrong way.

A man named John Harrison changed this. He spent 31 years testing new ideas. His first large clocks were called H1 and H2.

They were still too big. In 1761, he made the H4. It was small, like a pocket watch. It used a fast balance wheel to keep time.

This helped ships sail safely. Later, other makers like Pierre Le Roy made even better parts. These parts helped make modern clocks.
