A marina is a specialized dock or basin designed for small boats and yachts.

The name comes from Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian words meaning "related to the sea." While they may look like ports, marinas serve a very different purpose. A port is built to handle large passenger ships and heavy cargo from freighters. In contrast, a marina focuses on pleasure craft used for recreation. Some marinas are even located inland on rivers or canals. These inland versions might serve non-industrial boats, such as narrowboats on a canal.

Marinas can be found in many different types of water environments. Some are located along riverbanks that connect to lakes or the sea. Others are built within coastal lagoons or natural harbors. Some marinas exist as standalone facilities, while others are part of a larger port complex.

Because they are often built in specific coastal areas, space is frequently limited. This scarcity means that finding a permanent berth can be difficult. In some locations, a person might wait on a waiting list for many years.

To keep boats in good condition, marinas provide many technical services. Some facilities offer refueling, washing, and repair stations. They may also have marine chandlers, which are stores that sell supplies for boats.

To get a boat from a trailer into the water, marinas use slipways, also known as boat ramps. For much larger or heavier boats, a marina might use a travel lift. This is a specialized crane used to lift boats out of the water. Once lifted, the crane can transport the boat around the hard stand for storage or maintenance.

There are different ways for a boat to stay in one place. One method is mooring a boat to buoys in the water. This is often a cheaper option for renters, but it is less convenient for people. If a boat is on a buoy, the owner may need a water taxi, a launch, or a small inflatable tender to reach it.

Another method uses floating docks or pontoons. These walkways are tied to an anchoring piling using a roller or a ring mechanism. This allows the dock to move with the water while remaining connected to the land.

Managing water levels is a vital part of marina engineering. In areas where the tidal range is large, the water level changes significantly throughout the day. To solve this, some marinas use locks. A lock is a mechanism that can maintain a steady water level for several hours. This provides stability for boats during the periods before and after low water.

Without these systems, the changing tides could make docking very difficult.

The way marinas operate has changed significantly over the last two centuries. During the 19th century, there were very few dedicated marinas. At that time, the few existing pleasure craft had to share facilities with fishing and trading vessels. This changed in the 20th century as yachting became a popular activity.

As more people began boating for fun, the modern marina emerged as a dedicated space for recreation.

Marinas are organized through various economic models. Some are owned and operated by private clubs, such as yacht clubs. Others function as private enterprises or as part of a larger resort. Some are also municipal facilities owned and run by public entities.

Users pay for services through different fee structures. A visiting yachtsman might pay a single fee to use a shower or a clubhouse. Others might sign long-term rental agreements that include parking, picnic areas, and even pubs.
