Throughout much of the 20th century, she was a major figure in European cinema and theater. Her career spanned several decades and different artistic genres. She was particularly famous for her work in musical comedies and operettas. These performances combined singing, dancing, and acting into a single spectacle.

Rökk's professional development involved training in several different countries. She was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1913. Her family lived in Budapest before moving to Paris in 1924. In Paris, she began her dance training and performed at the Moulin Rouge cabaret. Her training continued in the United States, where she worked with Ned Wayburn. After a period of international travel and training, she returned to Europe to begin her film career in 1930. This diverse background helped her develop the technical skills required for stardom.

Her rise to fame was driven by a specific strategy from the German film studio UFA. The studio wanted to create a domestic star to rival Hollywood musical actresses. They sought to match the popularity of stars like Eleanor Powell and Ginger Rogers. UFA selected Rökk because she was an acclaimed revue dancer. She was offered a two-year contract in 1934 to be groomed for this role. Her 1935 film, Leichte Kavallerie, made her an immediate sensation. She became the face of a new genre of escapist, lightweight operettas.

During her peak years, Rökk often performed in specific types of musical films. These movies were modeled after successful American productions from studios like Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Many of these films featured her alongside Johannes Heesters. The two were known as the "dream couple" of the musical comedy genre. In some films, such as Kora Terry in 1940, she performed double roles. This allowed her to show her range by playing both dutiful and evil twin sisters. She also appeared in early color films, including the Agfacolor production Women Are Better Diplomats in 1941.

Rökk's career took place during a complex and difficult historical period. During the Third Reich, the Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, aimed to use film to engage a cultural war with the U.S. and Britain. While her movies were not overtly political, she fulfilled a role intended to entertain the German people during World War II. Her 1944 film, The Woman of My Dreams, represented the peak of this era. After the war ended, she faced a professional ban known as Berufsverbot. She was eventually rehabilitated in 1947 and resumed her work in West Germany and Austria.

Her success is reflected in many prestigious awards and long-lasting fame. In 1948, she was among the first recipients of the German Bambi media award. She received several more Bambi awards in 1968, 1987, 1990, and 1998. She also won a Special Award for Outstanding Contributions to German Cinema in 1981. Beyond film, she became one of Europe's most famous operetta singers. She performed on stage at venues like the Raimund Theater in Vienna until 1986. This shows her incredible longevity as a professional artist.

Later in life, her legacy was subject to various historical inquiries. In 1994, allegations were made regarding her possible involvement with Soviet intelligence during the war. Some media reports in 2017 cited declassified documents suggesting she may have aided the Soviet Union. However, the German newspaper Die Welt later described these reports as unfounded. Rökk lived a long life, passing away in Austria in 2004 at the age of 90. Her life remains a significant example of the intersection between art, celebrity, and history.
