Mariano Melgarejo was the fifteenth president of Bolivia.

He served from December 28, 1864, until January 15, 1871. His rule is often called the Sexenio, which means a six-year period. Melgarejo was a military officer who rose to power through several coups d'état. A coup d'état is a sudden, often violent, seizure of government power. His presidency remains highly controversial in Bolivian history. He is remembered for poor administration and his treatment of indigenous people.

Melgarejo's early life was marked by hardship in the town of Tarata. He was born on April 13, 1820, to Ignacia Melgarejo and José Linares. His father was a Spaniard who did not recognize him as his son. Because of this, Melgarejo used his mother's surname. He grew up in a humble home in Tarata.

This house still exists today. His early environment helped shape his determined and willful personality.

His military career progressed with incredible speed. He joined the army in 1836 at age 16 as a private. He fought in the War of the Confederation and the Battle of Ingavi in 1841.

During the Battle of Ingavi, he showed great bravery. This led to his promotion to second lieutenant. He rose through the ranks steadily over the next two decades. He became a captain in 1850 and a major in 1855. By 1862, he reached the rank of general. This was the highest possible rank in the Bolivian army. He achieved this maximum rank in just 26 years.

Melgarejo's path to leadership involved many political conspiracies. In 1854, he led a failed revolt in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. He was captured and sentenced to death for high treason. However, several women from high society petitioned President Manuel Isidoro Belzu for mercy. Belzu granted a pardon, but he warned that people might regret it.

After his release, Melgarejo continued to influence politics. He helped overthrow President Jorge Córdova in 1857. Later, he helped President José María de Achá take power in 1862.

His rise to the presidency was tied to personal and political chaos. In 1864, rumors spread regarding an affair between Melgarejo and President Achá's wife. This scandal caused the president to lose respect within the army. Melgarejo took advantage of this instability. He launched a coup against Achá in December 1864. Once in power, he faced many challenges. A group called the Constitutionalists led rebellions against him between 1865 and 1866. He also faced a civil war when former President Belzu returned from exile.

On March 27, 1865, Melgarejo's forces killed Belzu in La Paz.

Melgarejo's presidency had lasting negative effects on Bolivia. He signed unfavorable border treaties with Chile in 1866. He also signed a treaty with Brazil in 1867. These agreements caused significant problems for the country in later years. His administration was also noted for its treatment of indigenous populations. His leadership style was often described as despotic. This means he ruled with absolute power and often ignored the law.

His rule ended through a violent uprising in 1871. General Agustín Morales led the army against him. The people of La Paz also supported the revolt. A very fierce battle occurred within the city of La Paz. The uprising successfully deposed Melgarejo on January 15, 1871. Melgarejo fled to Chile to escape the conflict. He later traveled to Lima, Peru, to find his lover, Juana Sánchez. On November 23, 1871, he was shot and killed in Lima. The act was carried out by Juana's brother, José Aurelio Sánchez.
