Published in Milan in 1748, this work served as a systematic illustration of infinitesimal calculus. The book was designed to integrate mathematical analysis with algebra. The first volume focused on the analysis of finite quantities. The second volume addressed the analysis of infinitesimals. It was regarded as the best introduction to the works of Leonhard Euler. The book's importance led to translations in French in 1775 and English in 1801.
Her academic success brought her international recognition and prestigious honors. Empress Maria Theresa sent her a diamond ring and a crystal case. Pope Benedict XIV sent her a gold wreath and a gold medal. In 1750, the Pope appointed her to the chair of mathematics, natural philosophy, and physics at the University of Bologna. This made her the second woman ever to be granted a university professorship, following Laura Bassi. However, due to her health and personal choices, she never actually served in this role.
One of her most famous mathematical legacies is a specific geometric curve. In her book, she discussed a curve previously studied by Pierre de Fermat and Guido Grandi. Agnesi called the curve a *versiera* in Italian, meaning "turning in every direction." 
In the later decades of her life, Agnesi shifted her focus toward theology and charity. After her father died in 1752, she devoted herself to the study of the Church Fathers. She also dedicated her life to serving the poor, the homeless, and the sick. She gave away many of the expensive gifts she had received from royalty and the Pope. In 1771, she was invited to serve as a director for women and the sick at the Pio Albergo Trivulzio in Milan. She died on January 9, 1799, and was buried in a mass grave for the poor. Her legacy continues through the asteroid 16765 Agnesi and a crater on the planet Venus.
