Later, a doctor named Gaetano Tacconi taught her philosophy and logic. Bassi eventually became very interested in Newtonian science. This is the study of how things move and work. This interest even caused her to drift away from her teacher. She preferred to study the new ideas of Isaac Newton.

In 1732, Bassi reached a huge goal. She went to a big building called the Palazzo Pubblico. There, she defended forty-nine theses, which are long scientific ideas. This was a public debate held before many important people. After this, the University of Bologna gave her a doctorate on May 12, 1732.

Between the ages of thirteen and twenty, she studied philosophy, metaphysics, and natural philosophy with Gaetano Tacconi. Tacconi was a professor of medicine at the University of Bologna. Eventually, Bassi and Tacconi grew apart because of her interest in Newtonian science. She preferred the new ideas of Isaac Newton over the Cartesian teachings preferred by her tutor.

In 1732, Bassi achieved several historic milestones through a series of public defenses. On April 17, she defended forty-nine theses regarding Philosophica Studia at the Palazzo Pubblico. This public debate took place before university professors and many important political and religious figures. On May 12, 1732, the University of Bologna awarded her her doctoral degree. Later that month, she defended twelve more theses at the Archiginnasio to petition for a teaching position. These additional theses covered diverse subjects like chemistry, physics, hydraulics, and mechanics. By the end of 1732, she was appointed as a professor of natural philosophy.

Bassi's professional life was defined by both groundbreaking success and social restrictions. She became the world's first salaried female university lecturer. However, the university initially restricted her from teaching all-male classes. To navigate these limits, she eventually received permission to conduct private lessons and experiments at her home. In 1745, she was appointed as an additional member of the Benedettini, an elite group of 25 scholars. This group was established by Prospero Lambertini, who was then the Archbishop of Bologna and later became Pope Benedict XIV. While Bassi was the only woman in the group, she was granted the position without voting rights.

Her scientific work focused heavily on Newtonian mechanics and experimental physics. Bassi was a key figure in introducing Newton's theories to Italy. She and her husband, Giuseppe Veratti, collaborated on experimental research regarding electricity during the 1760s. This research attracted other famous scientists, such as Abbé Nollet, to study in Bologna. Throughout her career, Bassi authored 28 scientific papers, mostly regarding physics and hydraulics. Although she did not publish books, her influence was felt across Europe. She maintained an extensive correspondence with eminent thinkers like Voltaire and Alessandro Volta.
