She was born in Tokyo. Her father was a writer named Mori Ōgai. She learned much from him. In 1957, she won an award for her essays. These essays were in a book called My Father's Hat.

Mari Mori is best known for her novels. She wrote about the love between men. These are called tanbi shousetsu, or aesthetic novels. One famous book was A Lovers' Forest. It won the Tamura Toshiko Prize in 1961. This book had a man named Guido and a boy named Paulo. Guido was rich and wise. He was about 38 years old. Paulo was 17 or 18. The man in her stories often spoils the younger boy. This was a common part of her work.

She won more awards later in her life. In 1975, a book of hers won the Izumi Kyōka Prize for Literature. Mari Mori had two husbands. Her first husband was a professor of French literature. She died in 1987. Many of her books were published even after she died. People still study her work today.
