Margery married a man named John Kempe. They had at least fourteen children in their family. She is known today for her very special book. Some people believe it is the first autobiography in the English language. An autobiography is a story a person tells about their own life.

Margery's life was filled with very strong feelings and visions.

She believed she had deep conversations with holy figures like Jesus and Mary. These experiences were not just thoughts for her. They affected her physical senses too. She said she could hear strange music and smell unknown scents. These visions often made her cry very loudly in public. Her weeping was a way she showed her deep devotion to God. This behavior sometimes made the people around her feel quite annoyed.

Her spiritual journey began after she had her first child.

During this time, she went through a very hard period of crisis. She claimed to see visions of demons that tried to turn her away from her faith. She also saw visions of Jesus Christ. These moments changed how she lived her life. She eventually decided to live a life of great prayer and devotion. She even traveled to meet a famous woman named Julian of Norwich. Julian told her that her intense feelings were a sign of her faith.

Because her ways were so unusual, Margery faced many hard jobs.

She was tried for heresy several times by religious leaders. Heresy is a word used when people think someone's beliefs are wrong. Some people were upset because she preached in public. At that time, women were usually not allowed to preach. She was even put in prison by town officials at one point. However, she was never convicted of any wrongdoing. She was able to defend her beliefs with great pride.

Since Margery could not read or write, she had to find a way to tell her story.

In the 1420s, she began to dictate her words to a scribe. A scribe is a person who writes down what someone else says. She worked with a local priest to help finish the book. Her book tells us about her many long journeys, called pilgrimages. She traveled to holy sites in Europe and the Holy Land. Today, her book helps us understand what life was like in the Middle Ages. It is a unique window into her world and her mind.
