She holds a unique place in history as the first Miss America. This title was not part of a single, established pageant at first. Instead, it grew from a series of local and regional competitions. Gorman's success began in Washington, D.C., where she was a student at Western High School. Her journey shows how local popularity can lead to national recognition.

Her path to fame started with a specific sequence of events in 1921. First, her photo was entered into a popularity contest held by the Washington Herald. This contest led to her being chosen as Miss District of Columbia. She was only sixteen years old when she received this title. The judges chose her because of her athletic ability and her outgoing personality. This local victory served as the catalyst for her national involvement.

Following her local win, Gorman moved into the competitive world of Atlantic City. She was invited as an honored guest to the Second Annual Atlantic City pageant. This event took place on September 7 and 8, 1921. During this time, a new event was created called the "Inter-City Beauty" contest. Gorman participated in this new competition to test her skills against others. This transition from a local winner to a national competitor was a key stage in her career.

In Atlantic City, Gorman competed in a specific event called the Bather's Revue. This competition resulted in several different titles and honors for her. She was named the "Inter-City Beauty, Amateur." She also earned the title of "The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America." Most importantly, she won the grand prize, which was a trophy known as the Golden Mermaid.

Through these specific wins, she was officially crowned as Miss America.

Margaret Gorman holds several distinct records within the history of the Miss America pageant. She is the only Miss America to receive her crown at the end of the year. She also set a record for being the lightest winner in the pageant's history. At the time of her win, she weighed 108 pounds. This record stood for many years until 1949. In that year, Jacque Mercer from Phoenix, Arizona, won the title at 106 pounds.

Despite her massive success, Gorman's personal feelings about her fame were complex. She later stated that she never cared to be Miss America. She noted that the title was not her own idea. She even expressed that she felt bored by the entire experience. She once said that she really wanted to forget the whole thing.

However, she did keep a piece of her history, such as her sea green chiffon and sequined dress from the 1922 competition.

After her time in the spotlight, Gorman lived a much quieter life in Washington, D.C. She married Victor Cahill in 1925, and he remained her husband until his death in 1957. She became a socialite and found joy in traveling. She lived to the age of 90, passing away on October 1, 1995. Her life connects the early days of American pageantry to the long history of the Miss America organization.
