It sits within the fertile Peshawar Valley. The city serves as the district headquarters for the surrounding region. Mardan is currently the second-largest city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, trailing only Peshawar. To its south lies Risalpur, while Charsadda is located to the west. Yar Hussain sits to the east, and Takht Bahi and Katlang are to the north. The city has become a fast-growing urban center in recent decades.

The climate in Mardan is classified as hot semi-arid, influenced by the local steppe climate. This means the region experiences significant temperature shifts throughout the year. The average temperature across the city is 22.2 °C. June is typically the hottest month, with an average temperature reaching 33.2 °C. In contrast, January is the coldest month, averaging 10.0 °C. Rainfall patterns also vary significantly by season. The annual precipitation averages 559 mm. August is the wettest month, receiving about 122 mm of rain. Mardan is a place of immense archaeological importance. The region contains evidence of human activity spanning tens of thousands of years. In 1962, researchers discovered the Sanghao Caves outside the city. These caves yielded artifacts from the Middle Paleolithic period, dating back over 30,000 years. Other nearby sites show evidence of the Upper Paleolithic period. Excavations near Jamal Garhi have also recovered items from the Mesolithic period. This long history makes the area a vital site for studying human development.

Ancient civilizations left many lasting marks on the Mardan landscape. Around 1800 BCE, the area was a homeland for the Gandhara grave culture. This group may have been part of the Indo-Aryan migrations. Later, the region became part of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Gandhara.

In the mid-200s BCE, the Indian King Ashoka left rock edicts at nearby Shahbaz Garhi. These carvings use the Kharosthi script, which is written from right to left. These edicts represent the earliest irrefutable evidence of writing in South Asia.

Mathematical and artistic history is also deeply tied to this area. In 1891, the Bakhshali manuscript was discovered near Mardan. This document is the oldest extant manuscript in Indian mathematics. It contains the earliest record of the use of the number 0 in the Indian subcontinent.

Art from the region also reached global fame. A famous Seated Buddha statue, dating from 300 to 500 CE, was found nearby. It is currently displayed at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Other religious sites include the Kashmir Smast caves, which served Buddhist monks from the fourth to ninth century CE.

The modern history of Mardan includes significant political and social changes. Until 1937, the Mardan District was part of the Peshawar District. In 1892, the Guides' Memorial was built to honor soldiers from the 1879 Siege of the British Residency in Kabul.

Mardan is also an important economic and educational center. The city is part of a growing industrial zone. It houses textile mills, edible oil mills, and one of the largest sugar mills in South Asia. Proximity to the planned Rashakai economic zone under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) may also benefit the city. Education is supported by several institutions. Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan opened in 2009. The Women University Mardan began functioning in 2016. There is also the University of Engineering and Technology Madan. For recreation, the Mardan Sports Complex offers facilities for cricket, football, and swimming.
