Marcus Licinius Crassus was a leader in ancient Rome.

He was known as the richest man in Rome. He was not born with this wealth. He worked hard to build his fortune.

Crassus made money in many ways. He bought land and silver mines. He even used a clever way to get rich from fires. He started a team of 500 men to fight fires. When a building burned, he offered to buy it for a low price. If the owner said yes, his men put out the fire. If not, the building burned down.

Crassus was also a general. He fought in wars to help the leader Sulla. Later, he helped stop a slave revolt led by Spartacus. He joined two other leaders, Pompey and Julius Caesar. These three men ruled Rome together in a group. This group was called the First Triumvirate.

Crassus later led an army against the Parthian Empire. This plan was a big failure. He lost a battle at Carrhae and died soon after. His death broke the bond between Caesar and Pompey. This helped lead to more wars in Rome.
