He was a major figure in 20th-century design. Breuer helped shape the International Style, which is a way of designing buildings and objects. He was known for both his small furniture pieces and his massive buildings. His work includes art museums, libraries, and many residences. He was a great innovator who adapted older ideas for modern life.

Breuer developed his design skills through several different materials. He began by working in the carpentry shop at the Bauhaus school. He famously used tubular steel for furniture after being inspired by bicycle handlebars. This led to the creation of the Wassily Chair and the Cesca Chair.

Later, he experimented with bent and formed plywood. In his later career, he shifted toward using concrete and stone as his primary materials. This allowed him to create much larger institutional structures.

His architectural style moved through four distinct phases. The first phase focused on the International Style, using white boxes and glass. The second phase used punctured wooden walls, seen in his 1948 "House in the Garden."

The third phase utilized modular prefabricated concrete panels. This style was used for his IBM Laboratory in France. The final phase involved using shaped concrete and stone for unique commissions. These phases show how his technical vocabulary grew over time.

Breuer's journey began in Pécs, Hungary, in 1902. He was born into a Jewish family. As a young man, he became one of the first students at the Bauhaus in Germany. This was a radical arts and crafts school founded by Walter Gropius. Gropius became Breuer's lifelong mentor.

After the school moved to Dessau in 1925, Breuer became a Master and taught architecture. He eventually moved to London in 1935 and then to the United States in 1937.

Breuer's career in America was marked by significant projects and partnerships. He joined the faculty at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. He and Gropius formed a partnership that influenced American modern house design.

In 1944, he became a naturalized American citizen. He moved to New York City in 1946 to establish his own practice. He worked with many partners, such as Harry Seidler and Pier Luigi Nervi. He often shared design credit with his associates.

His buildings often served large, important functions. He designed the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, finished in 1955. He also designed the Saint John's Abbey church in Minnesota in 1954.

In 1966, he completed the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan.

He also designed the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building in Washington, D.C. Some of his large buildings, like the HUD headquarters, received criticism from officials. However, his influence on the urban landscape remained massive.

Breuer's legacy is tied to his ability to innovate with new technology. He designed the Geller House, which used a "butterfly" roof. This roof has two surfaces that slope toward a central drain. He also worked with Beverly Lorraine Greene, a licensed African-American woman architect.

In 1968, he received the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects. He died in Manhattan in 1981. His work continues to be studied by designers everywhere.
