He was a lawyer before he became president. He took power in 1898. He stayed in power for 22 years. This was the longest time any leader held office in Guatemala.

He wanted to grow the country. He worked with the United Fruit Company. This was a large American business. He gave them land and tax breaks. In return, they helped build railroads and ports. Many people did not like this deal. They felt the company had too much power.

Estrada Cabrera was a dictator. A dictator is a leader with total control. He used force to stay in charge. He used spies to watch people. He also used his army to stop workers from striking.

Some people tried to stop him. In 1907, a group used a bomb. They called it "The Bomb."

The bomb did not hurt the president. It did kill his driver and a horse.

In 1920, the government removed him. They said he was not fit to lead. He was sent to jail for corruption.
