Jorge Ubico was a military leader in Guatemala.

He became the president in 1931. He was the only person on the ballot for that election.

Ubico had total control over the country. He used spies to watch what people did. He even put military officers in charge of schools and the post office. He gave much power to the United Fruit Company. This company owned a lot of land and the railroads.

Ubico was known for being very strict. He worked to stop corruption in the government. However, he also punished people who disagreed with him. Some people were jailed for criticizing him.
