He is widely celebrated as one of the greatest Latin American players in history. Ginóbili played as a shooting guard for 23 years. His career spanned several countries, including Argentina, Italy, and the United States. He is most famous for his long tenure with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. During his time there, he became a key part of the "Big Three." This trio included teammates Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. Together, they led the Spurs to four NBA championships. His excellence earned him a place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Ginóbili’s style of play changed how the game looked in the NBA. He is credited with popularizing the "Euro step" move. This is a specific way of moving toward the basket to avoid defenders. He was also a master of the "sixth man" role. A sixth man is a highly skilled player who does not start the game. Instead, they come off the bench to provide energy and scoring. Ginóbili was so effective in this role that he won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 2008. He received 123 out of 124 first-place votes for that honor.

His professional journey began in his home country of Argentina. He was born on July 28, 1977, in Bahía Blanca. Basketball was a family tradition for him. His father, Jorge Hector Ginóbili, was a coach at the Bahiense del Norte club. His older brothers, Leandro and Sebastián, also played professionally. Manu made his debut in the Argentine league with Andino Sport Club during the 1995–96 season. He later played for his hometown team, Estudiantes de Bahía Blanca. After his time in Argentina, he moved to Europe to play in Italy. He played for Basket Viola Reggio Calabria and later for Kinder Bologna.

His years in Italy were incredibly successful. While playing for Kinder Bologna, he helped the team win the 2001 EuroLeague championship. He also achieved a "Triple Crown" during this period. Ginóbili earned the EuroLeague Finals MVP award in 2001. He was also named the Italian League MVP for two consecutive seasons. In 1999, the San Antonio Spurs selected him in the NBA draft. However, he was the 57th overall pick, which is very late in the second round. He chose to stay in Italy for a few more years before joining the Spurs in 2002.

In the NBA, Ginóbili became a vital part of the Spurs' success. In his first championship season in 2003, he played in every playoff game. He helped the Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Finals. During the 2004–05 season, he was selected as an NBA All-Star. He also helped the team win their third championship that year. In the 2007–08 season, he reached new heights as a player. He became the first guard in Spurs history to record at least 15 points and 15 rebounds in a single game.

Ginóbili also achieved historic success with the Argentine national team. He led Argentina to a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. In that tournament, he was named the FIBA Olympics Most Valuable Player. His team achieved a historic feat by eliminating the United States men's national team. This remains the only time a team has done so in Olympic history as of 2025. By winning an Olympic gold, a EuroLeague title, and an NBA championship, he joined Bill Bradley as one of only two players to hold all three honors.

Beyond the court, Ginóbili has a rich personal background. He is of Italian descent and holds citizenship in both Argentina and Italy. He is fluent in Spanish, English, and Italian. He married Marianela Oroño in 2004, and they have three sons: Dante, Nicola, and Luca. When he is not busy with basketball, he enjoys traveling, watching movies, and listening to Latin music. He also likes active hobbies like cycling and tennis. In September 2021, the Spurs kept him in the organization as a special advisor to basketball operations. His career remains a powerful example of how a late draft pick can become a global icon.
