Mannerism

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Mannerism is a sophisticated style of European art, music, and literature. It emerged in Italy around 1520 and spread widely by 1530. In Italy, the movement lasted until the end of the 16th century. During this time, the Baroque style eventually replaced it. However, Northern Mannerism continued into the early 17th century. The name comes from the Italian word *maniera*, which means "style" or "manner."

This term can describe a specific type of style or a person's general way of doing things. Art historians still debate whether Mannerism is a specific movement, a period, or just a style.

This artistic style developed as a reaction to the High Renaissance. During the High Renaissance, artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael focused on harmony, balance, and ideal beauty. Mannerism moved away from these rational approaches. Instead, it privileged compositional tension and instability.

Artists often used elongated proportions to make bodies look unnaturally long. They also used highly stylized poses and theatrical lighting. Many Mannerist works lack a clear sense of perspective. This creates an artificial quality rather than a naturalistic one. The art feels more like a display of skill than a window into the real world.

The movement began because young artists felt a sense of crisis. They believed that technical challenges had already been solved by the masters. Knowledge of anatomy, light, and human emotion had reached near perfection. To find new goals, these artists sought new approaches. This development happened between 1510 and 1520 in Florence and Rome.

They began to study the works of past masters rather than studying nature directly. Many looked to the powerful and personal style of Michelangelo for inspiration. Some students were so eager to learn that they even stole drawings from his house.

Competition was a major driver for the innovation seen in Mannerism. Wealthy patrons often encouraged artists to compete for important commissions. This rivalry pushed artists to be as inventive as possible.

A famous example involved Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Both were commissioned by Piero Soderini to decorate the Hall of Five Hundred in Florence. They were set to paint side by side. This environment fueled the creation of more elaborate clothes and dramatic compositions. The desire to surpass predecessors became a central part of the artistic process.

Historians often divide Mannerism into two distinct phases. The first phase is known as the "anti-classical" period, which lasted until about 1540 or 1550. Early Mannerists in Florence, such as Jacopo da Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, used irrational settings and collapsed perspectives. In Rome, artists like Parmigianino and Giulio Romano moved in similar directions.

This phase was characterized by a reaction against the balanced conventions of the High Renaissance.

The second phase is often called "High Maniera." This period lasted from about 1530 to 1580 and focused on intellectual sophistication. Artists like Agnolo Bronzino and Giorgio Vasari exemplified this style. They practiced an "art imitating art" approach.

They used exquisite attention to detail and exaggerated elegance. Figures often have porcelain-like skin and appear very calm or even aloof. These works are sometimes described as "cold" because the subjects rarely display strong emotions.

Mannerism was not limited to just painting. The style also influenced literature and music through highly florid and intellectual forms. In literature, some poets practiced *Bella maniera* to try and surpass the virtuosity of earlier poets like Petrarch.

The style also spread across Europe through prints and illustrated books. After the Sack of Rome in 1527, many artists fled the city. This helped spread the style throughout Italy and Northern Europe. Consequently, Mannerism became the first international artistic style since the Gothic period.
