Artists used this style to show off their great skill. They did not try to make art look like real life. Instead, they made shapes that were long and thin. They used odd poses and bright, theatrical lights. Some paintings look a bit unstable or crowded.

Young artists felt that older masters had already done everything perfectly. They wanted to find new ways to work. They studied great artists like Michelangelo.

They even tried to copy his style to learn. This created a sense of competition between painters. Some artists even worked side by side to win prizes.

Later, the style became very elegant. Figures might have skin that looks like smooth porcelain.
