The Mandara Mountains are a beautiful and rugged mountain range.

They sit along the border of Cameroon and Nigeria. This range stretches about 190 km across the landscape. It starts at the Benue River in the south. It reaches toward the north-west of Maroua in the north. The highest point is the summit of Mount Oupay. This peak reaches 1,494 meters above sea level.

These mountains formed through many interesting changes. Long ago, deep rock rose up from beneath Africa. This movement caused the land to split and fragment. At that time, the weather was much wetter. Huge amounts of rain formed many rushing rivers. These rivers carved deep paths through the rocks. This created the rough and rocky ground we see today.

Volcanoes also helped shape the look of the range. Lava erupted and formed many volcanic cones. The vents of these volcanoes filled with hardening magma. These hard cores are called volcanic plugs. Over a long time, the outside of the cones wore away. The hard plugs did not wear away as easily. This left behind sharp, needle-like spires like Kapsiki Peak.

The climate here is a tropical savanna. The weather is shaped by how high the land is. Most rain falls during the wet season from May to October. The dry season lasts from November to April. The mountains have many different plants and animals. Open woodlands with Isoberlinia doka trees once covered much of the area. Today, only some parts of these woodlands remain. Some rare plants and reptiles live on the highest peaks.

Many people live in this busy region. They speak many different Chadic languages. Groups like the Mofu and Kirdi live here. People have learned to farm on the steep slopes. They build terraces, which are flat steps, to protect the soil. They grow crops like sorghum, millet, and legumes. Farmers also use sheep, goats, and cattle to help. The animals eat leftover plants and provide manure for the soil. This helps the crops grow well in the mountains.
