A big canal helps ships move.
A long time ago, people wanted a way to bring big ships to Manchester.
To move ships up the hill, they used special doors. These doors are called locks. They lift the ships higher in the water.
Building the canal took six years. It was very big and very long. It helped the city find more work.
The Manchester Ship Canal is a long waterway in England.
In the late 1800s, businesses in Manchester had problems. It was too expensive to move goods by train or by the docks in Liverpool. People wanted a way to save money and create new jobs. They decided to build a canal. This was a big plan. It took six years to build. The work began in 1887 and cost over £15 million.
To move ships up to the city, workers used locks. Locks are special parts that lift ships to higher water levels.
Later, ships became much larger. Many new ships were too big for the canal. This meant fewer ships used the water. Today, a company called Peel Holdings owns the canal. They have plans to grow the shipping business again by the year 2030.

To make this work, engineers had to solve a big problem. Manchester sits higher than the sea level. To get ships up to the city, they used a system of locks. Locks are like water elevators that lift vessels to higher levels.

Building the canal was a long and hard job. In the 1880s, businesses in Manchester faced a hard time called the Long Depression. Moving goods through Liverpool was too expensive for them. A man named Daniel Adamson led the push to build the canal. He held a meeting at his home, The Towers, in 1882. Engineers like Edward Leader Williams helped design the plan.
Construction finally began in 1887. It took six years of hard work to finish the project. The total cost was just over £15 million.

Things changed as time went on. In the 1970s and 1980s, shipping changed with something called containerisation. This means goods began to move in very large metal boxes. Most new ships became too big to fit through the canal. Because of this, fewer ships used the water. Today, a company called Peel Holdings owns the canal. They have a big project called the Atlantic Gateway. They hope to increase shipping to 100,000 containers a year by 2030.
The Manchester Ship Canal is a massive inland waterway located in North West England.
To move ships from the sea up to the city, engineers had to manage different water levels. Manchester sits higher than the sea level, which creates a vertical challenge. They solved this using a system of locks. A lock is a chamber with gates that acts like a water elevator.
The history of navigating these rivers began much earlier than the canal itself. In 1721, the Rivers Mersey and Irwell Navigation Act allowed for early improvements. By 1734, moderate-sized boats could travel between Manchester and the sea. However, these early routes were difficult to use. They often lacked enough depth during low rainfall or strong winds. Later, the Bridgewater Canal and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway increased competition for moving goods. By the late 19th century, the old river navigation had fallen into such disrepair that it was often unusable.
In the 1880s, Manchester faced economic challenges known as the Long Depression. Local businesses felt that the fees charged by Liverpool's docks and railways were too high. They wanted a way to bypass these costs. A manufacturer named Daniel Adamson led the movement to build a new ship canal.
Building the canal was a massive undertaking that required intense political battles. Supporters faced heavy opposition from the city of Liverpool. The canal's proponents had to submit several bills to Parliament to get permission. After much debate and several rejected attempts, the third bill passed in 1885. Construction began in 1887 and took six years to complete. The total cost of the project was just over £15 million.
The canal's impact on British trade was immediate and significant. Even though it was located inland, the Port of Manchester became Britain's third-busiest port.
In the late 20th century, the way the world moves goods changed. The rise of containerisation in the 1970s and 1980s meant that ships became much larger. Most of these modern vessels were too big to fit through the Manchester Ship Canal. This led to a decline in traffic and the closure of terminal docks at Salford. Today, the canal is owned by Peel Holdings. They are working on the Atlantic Gateway project. Their goal is to increase shipping to 100,000 containers per year by 2030.
