Greater Manchester is a metropolitan and ceremonial county located in North West England.

The geography of the region features two very different landscapes. The center and south-west consist of lowlands. These areas are similar to the Cheshire Plain and the West Lancashire Coastal Plain. In contrast, the north and east are much higher in elevation. These areas form part of the Pennines mountain range. Specific sections include the West Pennine Moors, the South Pennines, and the Peak District.

Human history in this region stretches back many centuries. Evidence suggests that people lived here during the Iron Age, specifically at Mellor. The Celtic Britons also inhabited the area. A known settlement named Chochion is believed to have been in the Wigan area. The Brigantes tribe is thought to have settled there. Roman occupation is also documented in the region. Archaeologists have found the remains of 1st-century forts at Castlefield in Manchester. Another Roman fort, Castleshaw, is located in Saddleworth.
The Industrial Revolution fundamentally transformed the local landscape. Before this era, the region was largely rural. The discovery and exploitation of the Lancashire coalfield fueled rapid industrialisation. The area became a global center for manufacturing cotton textiles. This shift was driven by mechanisation in the textile trade. It also encouraged the production of domestic flannel and fustian cloth. This created a system of cross-regional trade. As a result, towns like Bury, Oldham, and Bolton became vital economic centers.
Urbanisation in the region occurred at an astonishing rate. Around the turn of the 19th century, townships near Manchester began to expand rapidly. This was an unplanned process of urban growth. It created a conurbation, which is a large area formed by several cities and towns. This growth was a steady accretion of houses, factories, and transport infrastructure. By 1848, urban sprawl had fused Manchester to its surrounding towns. This formed a single, continuous urban area. By 1835, Manchester was considered the first and greatest industrial city in the world.
Modern Greater Manchester was officially created on 1 April 1974. It was formed from parts of north-east Cheshire, south-east Lancashire, and a small part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The county is organized into ten metropolitan boroughs for local government.

The region remains culturally significant on a global scale. Greater Manchester is recognized for its contributions to music, specifically guitar and dance music. It is also famous for its professional football teams.
