Long ago, the land had a different name. The native Pennacook people called the river area Namaoskeag. This name means "good fishing place." Later, a man named John Goffe III settled there in 1722. In 1807, Samuel Blodget opened a system of canals. He wanted to make a great industrial center. He named the city after Manchester in England.

Manchester is the most populous city in the state of New Hampshire.

The city's geography is defined by its water features. The Merrimack River drains the area. Its tributaries include the Piscataquog River and Cohas Brook. Massabesic Lake sits on the eastern border of the city. The highest point in the city is atop Wellington Hill. The total area of Manchester includes both land and water. Water makes up about 5.33% of the city's total area. The climate is a humid continental type. This means the city has four distinct seasons. Winters are long, cold, and snowy. Summers are very warm and somewhat humid.
Before it was Manchester, the land had different names. The native Pennacook people called the area Namaoskeag. This name means "good fishing place" in their language. In 1722, John Goffe III settled near Cohas Brook. He built a dam and a sawmill there. The area was later called Tyngstown by Massachusetts. After New Hampshire separated from Massachusetts in 1741, the grant was ruled invalid. The area was rechartered as Derryfield in 1751.
The Industrial Revolution transformed the city into a massive economic hub. In 1809, Benjamin Prichard built a water-powered cotton spinning mill. By 1831, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company was incorporated. This company eventually became the largest cotton textile plant in the world. Engineers planned a model company town on the eastern bank. They used Elm Street as the main thoroughfare.
Rapid industrial growth required many new workers. This led to a large influx of immigrants. Many of these people came from French Canada. Many current residents are descendants of these workers.
Manchester has undergone many different stages of renewal. In the 1950s and 1960s, many mill buildings were abandoned. An anthrax incident in 1957 led to the destruction of the Arms Textile Mill. The city also used urban renewal to fill in canals for roads. However, the 1980s brought a new era of interest in the Millyard.
Today, Manchester is a center for culture and commerce. It is known for its fine Victorian architecture. The city is divided into many different neighborhoods. The planning board defines 25 distinct neighborhoods. Some major areas include Amoskeag, Rimmon Heights, and the North End.
