His work was part of a time called the Islamic Golden Age. He learned from many thinkers like Aristotle and Ibn Rushd. His ideas helped connect different kinds of learning together. Even now, his books are a cornerstone for many students of history and faith.
Moses ben Maimon was a prolific Sephardic Jewish rabbi during the Middle Ages. 

Maimonides was born in Córdoba, Spain, around 1135 or 1138. 
His life in Egypt was defined by both leadership and personal loss. While in Egypt, he helped rescue Jewish captives taken during a siege by the Christian Amalric of Jerusalem. He organized the community to collect ransom money to free these people. This leadership helped him become the nagid, or leader, of the Egyptian Jewish community. However, his family faced a major financial crisis when his brother, David, drowned at sea between 1169 and 1177. David had attempted to find wealth in the East, but the loss of family savings forced Maimonides to rely on his medical skills for income.
As a physician, Maimonides achieved great fame throughout the Muslim world. 
Maimonides was a deeply productive writer despite a very exhausting schedule. He wrote a massive fourteen-volume codification of halakha, which is Jewish law. This work is known as the Mishneh Torah and carries great canonical authority. He also established thirteen principles of faith. In 1172, he wrote his famous Epistle to Yemen to support Jewish communities there. He often felt a conflict between his desire for a quiet, contemplative life and his duty to others. He described a daily routine where he would work at the Sultan's palace and then spend his evenings healing people at home. This "incessant travail" may have contributed to his death at age 69.
His intellectual work was heavily influenced by several great thinkers. He studied ancient Greek philosophy through Arabic translations. He was influenced by the ideas of Aristotle, al-Farabi, ibn Sina, and his contemporary ibn Rushd. 
Maimonides died on 12 December 1204, in Fustat.
