The Maiden's Tower, known in Turkish as Kız Kulesi, is a historic structure located on a small islet.

It sits at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul, Turkey. The tower is positioned just 200 meters from the coast of Üsküdar.

Because of its unique location, the tower has served many different roles throughout history. It has functioned as a customs station, a watchtower, a lighthouse, and even a quarantine station. Its importance to Turkish culture is significant enough that it appeared on the 10 lira banknote from 1966 to 1981.

The history of the site began as early as 408 BC. An Athenian general named Alcibiades likely built a customs station there for ships coming from the Black Sea.

The site was then known as Arcla and Damialis. In 1110, the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus constructed a wooden tower protected by a stone wall. He also used an iron chain that stretched from the tower to another tower on the European shore. This chain helped control movement through the strait. At that time, a defense wall connected the islet to the Asiatic shore. The underwater remains of this wall are still visible today.

Over many centuries, the tower underwent several major changes due to conflict and natural disasters. During the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, a Byzantine garrison held the tower. Later, the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror used the structure as a watchtower. The tower faced many destructive events, including an earthquake in 1509 and a fire in 1721. Following the fire, Grand Vizier Damad Ibrahim Pasha ordered a reconstruction. This new building served as a lighthouse. In 1763, the tower was rebuilt again using more durable stone to ensure it would last longer.

The tower has also been used for public health purposes. From 1829, it served as a quarantine station to manage the spread of disease. Sultan Mahmud II restored the structure in 1832. In more recent history, the tower has required constant care to survive the elements. After the 1999 earthquake and tsunami in the Sea of Marmara, steel supports were added to strengthen the structure. In 1945, the harbor authority performed repairs to keep it standing. Today, the interior has been converted into a café and restaurant. Visitors can take private boats from the shore to enjoy views of Sarayburnu.

There are two famous legends that explain the tower's names. The name "Maiden's Tower" comes from a story about an emperor's daughter. An oracle predicted she would die from a venomous snake on her eighteenth birthday. To prevent this, the emperor built the tower to keep her safe from snakes. However, an asp was hidden inside a basket of fruit brought to her. The princess died just as the prophecy had foretold. The other name, Leander's Tower, comes from a Greek myth. In this story, a man named Leander swam across a strait to see a woman named Hero. One stormy night, his light went out and he drowned.

Maintaining the tower is a complex engineering challenge due to its environment. The structure is constantly surrounded by seawater and faces intense humidity and wind. These conditions cause material fatigue and salt crystallization. A technical report noted that the most serious damage occurred in the foundations and load-bearing walls. To fix this, workers began a major restoration in 2021. They used stainless steel tie rods in unseen areas to reinforce the stone masonry. They also replaced old concrete floors with lighter, structurally sound materials. This restoration was completed in 2023, and the tower reopened to the public in May.

It also featured in the film *Hitman* and was visible in *From Russia with Love*. The tower is a popular setting in Turkish television dramas like *Kördüğüm* and *Kurtlar Vadisi*. It even appears in the video game *Assassin's Creed: Revelations*. Whether in movies, games, or history books, the tower remains a central symbol of the Bosphorus and the city of Istanbul.
