Magnesium oxide

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Magnesium oxide is a white, solid mineral known as magnesia. It occurs naturally in the world as a mineral called periclase. This substance is a source of magnesium, which is a very important element. It is made of a lattice of tiny parts called ions. These ions stay held together by something called ionic bonding. This structure makes it a very stable material.

Scientists can make magnesium oxide in a few different ways. One way is through a process called calcination. This means heating magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide at high temperatures. You can also get it by treating seawater with limewater. The temperature you use changes how the powder works. Heating it between 700 and 1000 degrees Celsius makes a reactive form called light-burned magnesia. Using much higher heat, from 1500 to 2000 degrees Celsius, creates dead-burned magnesia. This version is much less reactive.

In the past, people used different names to tell minerals apart. They called this white mineral magnesia alba. This name literally means the white mineral from Magnesia. They used this name to distinguish it from magnesia nigra. That was a black mineral that contained manganese.

This mineral has many important jobs in our modern world. It is a refractory material, which means it stays stable in extreme heat. Because of this, it is used to make crucibles for melting things. It is also used as an insulator in electrical cables and stove heating elements. In construction, it helps make cement and fireproof wallboards. It can even be used as a fertilizer for plants and food for animals.

Magnesium oxide is also very helpful for science and health. In medicine, it can act as an antacid to help with heartburn or indigestion. It is also used as a supplement or a laxative. For the environment, it helps clean up soil and water. It can turn acidic waste into a more neutral state to trap heavy metals like lead. It is even used at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant to help manage radioactive waste.
