He served during the Eighty Years' War and the First Anglo-Dutch War. Tromp is remembered as an innovative naval tactician. His leadership helped the Dutch Republic become a major sea power. He was widely considered the best Dutch naval commander of his era. His life was marked by both great hardship and immense military success.

Tromp's early life was defined by the dangers of the sea.

He was born in Brielle in 1598. His father, Harpert Maertensz, was a captain of the frigate Olifantstromp. In 1610, a pirate squadron led by Peter Easton attacked the family's merchant ship. Tromp's father was killed by a cannonball during the engagement. The pirates captured the twelve-year-old Tromp and sold him into slavery in Salé. He worked as a cabin boy for two years before being redeemed. In 1621, he was captured again by Barbary corsairs near Tunis. He remained enslaved until 1622, when his skills in navigation and gunnery earned him freedom.

After gaining his freedom, Tromp entered the Dutch navy in July 1622.

He initially served with the Admiralty of the Maze in Rotterdam. By 1624, he had become a captain of the St. Antonius. In 1629, he served as the flag captain for Admiral Piet Pieterszoon Hein. Tromp was later appointed a full captain by stadtholder Frederick Henry. He spent years successfully commanding squadrons to fight the Dunkirkers. These efforts were vital to the Dutch cause during the Eighty Years' War.

Tromp's leadership style was highly organized and disciplined. In 1637, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland and West Frisia. This promotion followed the resignation of previous officers due to incompetence. Tromp demanded specific conditions to ensure the fleet's success. He insisted on having more ships and better supplies. He also required that his vessels be well-manned and properly outfitted. These strict standards helped repair a navy that had fallen into a deplorable state.

One of Tromp's most significant achievements was the Battle of the Downs. He used his flagship, the Aemilia, to lead a blockade of Dunkirk. During this period, he outmaneuvered a Spanish fleet bound for Flanders. In October 1637, Tromp attacked the Spanish armada at the Downs. This victory destroyed a large portion of the enemy fleet. Tromp was also a pioneer of the "line of battle" tactic. This method involved ships sailing in a deliberate line to fight. This innovation effectively signaled the end of Spanish naval dominance.

The First Anglo-Dutch War began in 1652 due to trade tensions.

Conflict arose after English leaders issued ordinances regarding foreign trade. The Battle of Dover was a key early engagement. It began when Tromp refused to lower his flag to English Admiral Robert Blake. This defiance led to a five-hour battle between their fleets. Throughout the war, Tromp commanded the Dutch fleet in several major battles. These included battles at Dungeness, Portland, and the Gabbard.

Tromp's career ended during the Battle of Scheveningen in 1653.
