De Witt held the position of Grand Pensionary of Holland. This role made him a central political leader in the United Provinces. He helped manage the republic during the First Stadtholderless Period. This was a time when the country functioned without a stadtholder.

De Witt was highly educated and came from a powerful family. His father, Jacob de Witt, was an influential regent in Dordrecht. Dordrecht was a major city in the province of Holland. Johan attended the Latin school in Dordrecht to study classical values. He later studied law and mathematics at Leiden University. In 1645, he earned a doctorate from the University of Angers.

He also gained allies like the banker Jean Deutz. These connections helped him build a stable political base. His family ties were essential for his long leadership.

De Witt worked closely with his uncle, Cornelis de Graeff. De Graeff was a powerful leader in Amsterdam. Together, they formed a political axis that organized the Dutch system.

De Witt represented the interests of the merchant and patrician classes. He belonged to the Dutch States Party. This group favored a republican style of government. They wanted power to stay with the regents in Holland. This was different from the Orange faction. The Orange faction supported the House of Orange-Nassau.

De Witt had specific political and economic goals. He wanted a peaceful foreign policy to protect trade. War was very expensive and hurt the economy. He also sought maximum autonomy for the province of Holland. He believed Holland should remain independent from the other six provinces.

He also worked to limit the power of the Princes of Orange. He felt their dynastic ambitions interfered with merchant interests. These goals were documented in the book *The Interest of Holland*. This book was written by Pieter de la Court in 1662.

The year 1672 was a turning point for the Dutch Republic. This year is known as the *Rampjaar*, or the Disaster Year. An alliance of England, France, and German states invaded the republic.
