It was used by the United States and many of its allies. This tank was known for being very reliable in the field. It was also designed to be made in huge numbers very quickly. Because it was so easy to build, tens of thousands were made. Many were sent to the British Commonwealth and the Soviet Union. This helped many different nations during the war.

Designers wanted the M4 to be much better than the older M3 Lee tank.

The M3 had an unusual shape that made it hard to use. Its main gun was mounted on the side of the hull. This meant the gun could not aim easily in all directions. To fix this, the M4 used a new turret for its gun. The designers also made sure parts were standardized. This means many parts were the same for every tank. Standard parts made it much easier to fix tanks during a battle.

The first production tanks were finished in February 1942. The United States built a total of 49,324 Sherman tanks. Only one other tank was made in larger numbers during the war. That was the Soviet T-34, with about 84,070 units built. The Sherman first saw combat in North Africa in late 1942. It fought with the British Army at the Battle of El Alamein. At that time, it was better than many enemy tanks.

There were many different versions of the Sherman tank.

Some had rounded hulls because they were made using a single large casting. Other versions had welded hulls instead. The tanks used different types of engines to move. Some used gasoline engines, while others used diesel engines. Some versions even had very long hulls to fit larger engines. The British also changed some Shermans to make them even stronger. They added a large 76.2 mm gun to a version called the Firefly.

It was used in many other conflicts around the world. It saw service in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. It was also used in the Arab-Israeli wars and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Eventually, the United States replaced the Sherman with newer tanks. These included the M26 Pershing and the M46 Patton. Even so, the Sherman is remembered as one of the most important tank designs ever made.
