The geography of the area is defined by its hills and water. The River Lea begins in the Leagrave area of the town. This area is surrounded by Great Bramingham Wood. This is an ancient woodland with records dating back 400 years. The Chiltern Hills consist of Cretaceous chalk. They also contain deposits from the last ice age. Because of the hilly terrain, major roads like the M1 and A6 run through the town. The climate is a temperate marine climate. It is influenced by the warming Gulf Stream. However, Luton is often 1–2 degrees Celsius cooler than surrounding towns. This is due to its position in the hills.

Luton has a history stretching back to the sixth century. The Anglo-Saxons are believed to have founded the settlement. In the 8th century, the name appeared as Lygetun. This meant "town on the River Lea." The Domesday Book recorded the town as Loitone and Lintone. In the 12th century, construction began on St Mary's Church.

The economy of Luton changed many times over the centuries. Originally, agriculture was the main way people earned a living. The population was only about 700 to 800 people then. In the 17th century, the hatmaking industry began. This trade became very important to the town's identity. The industry reached its peak in the 1930s. Later, the town became a center for the motor industry. Vauxhall Motors opened its plant in 1905.

During the Second World War, the factory built Churchill tanks. This made the town a target for the Luftwaffe. Air raids caused extensive damage. Over 1,500 homes were damaged or destroyed, and 107 people died.

Industrial shifts continued through the 20th century. The hat trade declined after the Second World War. It was replaced by other manufacturing. Car production at the Vauxhall plant continued until 2002. After that, the site focused on commercial vehicles. This manufacturing also came to an end in 2025. In 1938, London Luton Airport opened.

Luton is a diverse community with many different cultures. Large Irish and Pakistani communities live in the town. Many were attracted to the area by jobs at the Vauxhall plant. This diversity is seen in local festivals. The Saint Patrick's festival is held near Saint Patrick's Day. The Luton International Carnival is also held here. It is the largest one-day carnival in Europe.
