Lunar south pole

The Moon has a very special bottom called the lunar south pole.

This area is a place of big extremes. Some parts of the south pole stay in the sun almost all the time. Other parts stay in the dark forever. Scientists are very interested in this region because of these dark spots. These spots are found inside deep holes called craters. Because sunlight cannot reach the bottom of these craters, they stay very cold.

These dark, cold areas are known as cold traps.

These cold traps work like natural storage bins for space materials. They can hold water ice and other things called volatiles. This ice might have come from comets or meteorites hitting the Moon. It can also come from the solar wind. The ice stays frozen because of how the Moon handles heat. Sunlight bounces off the surface, and heat moves in different ways.

This thermal behavior keeps the ice tucked away in the shadows. Finding these resources is a huge job for future space travel.

Many different missions have traveled to study this rocky place. NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter on June 18, 2009.

This orbiter maps the area to see if humans could live there. Another mission called LCROSS crashed into the Cabeus crater to find water. It found that the crater floor had nearly 5% water. India also sent the Moon Impact Probe to hit the rim of Shackleton crater. This made India the first to impact the south pole region.

There are many important names and numbers in this region. The South Pole–Aitken basin is one of the most fundamental features there. There is also a mountain called Epsilon Peak. It is 9,050 km tall, which is taller than any mountain on Earth.

On August 23, 2023, India's Chandrayaan-3 made a soft landing near the pole. In February 2024, the IM-1 Odysseus lander became the first US Moon landing of the 21st century. Even more recently, the IM-2 lander arrived on March 6, 2025.

Learning about the south pole helps us plan for the future. The sunny rims of craters could provide solar energy for a base.

Meanwhile, the dark craters could provide the water needed for life. This makes the south pole a perfect spot for a lunar outpost. It is a place where the sun and the shadows work together. Scientists want to use these tools to help humans live on the Moon. Studying these craters is like reading a history book of our solar system.
