Luminiferous aether

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

For a long time, scientists believed light needed a special substance to travel. They called this invisible material the luminiferous aether. This idea was used to explain how light waves move through empty space. Most waves need a medium, which is something they move through. Sound waves move through the air, and water waves move through the ocean.

Scientists thought the aether was a spatial plenum. This means they believed space was completely filled with matter. Without the aether, they thought light waves could not travel through a vacuum.

Understanding how the aether worked was a very hard job. Different scientists had many different ideas about its physical qualities. Some thought it was a gas that filled all of space. Others thought it had to be a solid to support light waves. George Gabriel Stokes even suggested it might act like pine pitch. He thought it could be fluid at slow speeds but rigid at fast speeds. This would let the Earth move through it easily while still supporting light.

Many famous thinkers studied this mystery over many years. In the 1600s, Robert Boyle thought the aether was made of tiny particles. Isaac Newton also had ideas about it in his book, Opticks. He thought light was made of small particles called corpuscles. However, Newton also suggested an aethereal medium could cause light to bend. Later, in 1861, James Clerk Maxwell worked on the nature of light. He used math to show that light is a form of electromagnetic radiation.

Experiments eventually changed everything we knew about the aether. In 1887, Albert Michelson and Edward Morley performed a famous test.

They wanted to see if the Earth moved through the aether. Their experiment showed that the aether did not seem to exist. Other tests in the 1920s confirmed this finding. This led to a major change in how we see the world. Scientists had to find a new way to explain light without using the aether.

Today, we use new ideas to explain how light moves. Albert Einstein created the special theory of relativity. This theory explains why the Michelson-Morley experiment failed to find the aether. It suggests that light does not need a medium to travel. Light can move through empty space all by itself. This discovery helped lead to modern physics. It helped us understand both relativity and quantum theory.
