Optics is a branch of physics that studies light.

Classical Optics
Classical Optics

It looks at how light moves and how it acts with matter. Scientists study how we can use or detect light through different tools. This study covers visible light that we see every day. It also includes ultraviolet and infrared light. Even radio waves, microwaves, and X-rays are part of this study.

Understanding light helps us build amazing things. It is used in many different jobs and sciences.

There are different ways to describe how light works. One way is called geometric optics. This model treats light as a collection of rays. These rays travel in straight lines. They bend when they pass through or reflect off a surface.

Reflection and refraction

Another way is called physical optics. This is a more complete model. It includes wave effects like diffraction and interference.

Some light also acts like tiny particles. These particles are called photons. This part of science is known as quantum optics.

People have studied light for thousands of years. The earliest lenses were made from polished crystal.

Some of these date back to 2000 BC from Crete. In the 4th or 3rd century BC, Euclid wrote about optics. He linked vision to geometry. Later, the Persian mathematician Ibn Sahl wrote about lenses in 984.

In the 11th century, Alhazen wrote a famous book on optics. He used experiments to show how light reflects in all directions. His work helped people understand how we see.

Many famous scientists changed how we see light. Johannes Kepler studied lenses and how the eye works in the 1600s.

Isaac Newton showed that white light is a mix of colors. He used a prism to prove this in the late 1600s.

In the 1860s, James Clerk Maxwell linked light waves to electromagnetic theory. Later, Albert Einstein helped explain light as particles in 1905. These discoveries built the science we use today.

Optics is part of many things you know. It is used in astronomy to look at stars.

It is used in photography to take clear pictures. Doctors use optics for CT scans and other medical tools.

You can find optics in everyday objects like mirrors and telescopes. Even your own eyes use optics to help you see. Lenses in eyeglasses help people see much better.
