It sits at a special spot where two rivers meet. These are the Luhan and Olkhova rivers. The city is quite big, covering 28.6 thousand hectares of land. It is known for having very extreme weather. In fact, Luhansk holds both the highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded in Ukraine. The hottest day happened in August 2010. The coldest day was recorded in January 1935.

Building the city started with a big factory project. In 1795, the Russian government asked for a place to make cannons and ammunition. A British man named Charles Gascoigne led this work.

He built the factory where the Luhan River flows. This factory helped the city grow into a major industrial center. By 1882, the settlement officially became a city. A German company also started making locomotives there in 1896. This company became very important for making trains in the empire.

The history of the city includes many name changes. For a long time, it was called Luhansk. In 1935, it was renamed Voroshilovgrad to honor a Soviet leader.

Later, the name changed back to Luhansk in 1958. This happened because of a rule against naming places after living leaders. The name Voroshilovgrad returned in 1970 after the leader died. Finally, the name Luhansk was brought back for good in 1990. These changes show how much the politics of the area shifted over time.

Many different people have lived in Luhansk throughout its history. In 1897, about 20,400 people lived there. By 2001, the population was much larger. About 49.6% of the people identified as ethnically Ukrainian. Another 47% identified as ethnically Russian. Most people in the city speak Russian as their first language. The city is also a place for learning. It is home to several important schools, like the East Ukrainian National University.

Luhansk has also faced many difficult times during wars. During World War II, German troops captured the city in 1942. Local people fought back against the occupation. More recently, the city was part of the War in Donbas starting in 2014. During this time, the city changed hands between different groups. In 2022, Russia took control of the area. Even through these changes, the city remains a key part of the region's story.

It sits at the confluence of the Luhan and Olkhova rivers. This specific location helped the city develop into a significant industrial and administrative center. The city covers a total land area of 28.6 thousand hectares. It is known for having a hot summer humid continental climate. This climate results in extreme temperature variations. In fact, Luhansk holds both the highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded in Ukraine. The record high occurred on August 12, 2010. The record low was recorded on January 8, 1935.

The city's origins trace back to the late 18th century. In 1795, the Imperial Russian government issued a decree to establish a foundry. This was done to support the Black Sea Fleet. A British industrialist named Charles Gascoigne was commissioned to lead this project.

Gascoigne had previously founded various factories and mines across the Russian Empire. He established an ammunition and cannon factory at the meeting point of the Luhan and Olkhova rivers. The settlement grew around this industrial plant. The name "Luhansk" is derived from the Luhan River. It may also come from the word "lug," which means meadow in Russian. This refers to the floodplains surrounding the river.

Industrial growth accelerated significantly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The factory expanded during the Napoleonic Wars and the Crimean War. By 1880, the site functioned as a large industrial node. It was connected by rail to major cities and the Azov Sea. In 1882, the Luhansk Factory merged with the settlement of Kamianyi Brid. This merger resulted in the creation of the city of Luhansk. In 1896, a German industrialist founded a locomotive-building company there. This company, now known as Luhanskteplovoz, became operational in 1900. It eventually produced a large proportion of all locomotives in the Russian Empire.

The city's history is marked by many complex political shifts and name changes. In 1935, the city was renamed Voroshilovgrad to honor Kliment Voroshilov. He was a Soviet military commander and politician. In 1958, the name Luhansk was restored due to a Soviet decree. This decree prohibited naming populated places after living political figures. However, the name changed back to Voroshilovgrad in 1970 following his death. The name Luhansk was finally reinstated in 1990. These changes reflect the shifting political landscape of the Soviet Union and independent Ukraine.

Demographic changes have also shaped the city over time. In 1897, the population was 20,400, with 68.2% being Russian. By 1939, the population grew to 212,000. During this period, many Ukrainians moved to the city from the countryside. This included refugees fleeing the Holodomor famine. By 1959, the population was 47.1% Russian and 48.3% Ukrainian. In the 2001 census, 49.6% of inhabitants were ethnically Ukrainian and 47% were Russian. Most residents, approximately 85.3%, spoke Russian as their native language. The population has since declined from 505,000 in 1992 to 424,000 in 2014.

Luhansk has experienced significant conflict and instability. During World War II, German troops captured the city in July 1942. Local residents engaged in partisan warfare against the occupation. The Red Army liberated the city on February 14, 1943. More recently, the Russo-Ukrainian War began in 2014. Pro-Russian separatists seized government buildings and proclaimed the Luhansk People's Republic. This led to the War in Donbas. In 2022, Russia captured Sievierodonetsk and later annexed Luhansk Oblast. These conflicts have deeply impacted the city's administration and daily life.

Despite these challenges, Luhansk remains an important center for education and sport. The city hosts several prestigious institutions, including Luhansk University and Luhansk State Medical University. It is also the home of the football club Zorya Luhansk. The club won the Soviet Top League in 1972. Due to the occupation, the team has had to play matches in other locations like Zaporizhzhia. The city is administratively divided into four main districts.
