She was the mother of Joseph Smith. He started the Latter Day Saint movement. Lucy was a very important leader in this faith. She even wrote a book about her family history.

Lucy grew up in New Hampshire. During her time, many families were changing. Work was moving from farms to towns. This meant mothers had more work at home. Lucy felt a big job to teach her children about faith. She wanted them to follow a good path.

Lucy and her husband had many children. They lived through many hard times. Lucy once became very ill. She prayed to God for help. She felt a sense of hope after her prayer. Later, her son Joseph found golden plates. These plates told a story about early people. This helped start a new church in 1830.

Lucy helped many new people in the church. She shared her home with them. She also faced great sadness. Two of her sons, Joseph and Hyrum, were killed.
