She works as a director, a screenwriter, and a producer. Many people call her a great director in the world today. Her movies are shown at big international film festivals. These include festivals in Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and Toronto. Experts say her work is very important to art cinema. She has a reputation for making films that are very special. Her movies help tell stories from the Spanish-speaking world.

Martel learned how to tell stories from her own family. Her parents and grandmother were very good storytellers. They told many stories to her and her six siblings. They told these tales during the afternoon siesta. Martel noticed how they used different sounds and tones. She also noticed how they used pauses to create a mood. This taught her how to use sound in her movies. She loves how conversation and pauses can charm a listener. This interest became a major part of her filmmaking style.

Her path to becoming a director was not a straight line. As a young person, she studied many different things. She took classes in art history and chemical engineering. She even tried breeding and selling pigs for a short time. Later, she moved to Buenos Aires to study communication. She also took a nighttime class for animation. This class helped her learn technical and precise skills. She wanted to combine her scientific spirit with her creative side.

Martel had to teach herself much of what she knows. She tried to attend a state film school called ENERC. However, the school closed due to a lack of funds. There were no professors or materials for the students. To learn, she had to study on her own. She watched movies many times to see how they were edited. For example, she watched the film Pink Floyd: The Wall 23 times. She used this way to study how the scenes were put together.

Her first major success came from a script contest. She won a prize from the Argentine National Film Board. This prize gave her the money to make a short film. Her film was a western called Rey muerto. It won a prize at the Havana Film Festival in 1995. This success helped start a movement called New Argentine Cinema. This movement began in the mid-1990s in Argentina. It was a response to many years of political and economic crises. Her work remains a vital part of her country's history.
