Low-pressure area

A low-pressure area is a place where air pressure is low.

This often brings cloudy skies, wind, and rain. Low-pressure areas are the opposite of high-pressure areas. High-pressure areas usually have clear skies and light winds.

How do these areas form? One way is through cyclogenesis. This is the way a low-pressure system grows. In the upper sky, winds can move away from each other. This is called divergence. As these winds move apart, the air below them rises. This upward motion makes the pressure near the ground drop.

Heat can also make low pressure. In deserts, the sun heats the ground very much. This warm air is less dense than cool air. Because it is light, the warm air rises. We call these thermal lows.

Storms can also form over warm water. If they get very strong, we call them tropical cyclones. These storms need warm water and high humidity. The winds in a low-pressure area spin in a circle. In the north, they spin anti-clockwise. In the south, they spin clockwise.
