This area is also called an anticyclone. In an anticyclone, air moves from the center outward. This movement makes the wind turn in a circle.

The wind turns differently depending on where you live. In the Northern Hemisphere, the wind turns clockwise. In the Southern Hemisphere, it turns counterclockwise. This happens because of the Coriolis effect. This is a force caused by the Earth's rotation.

High pressure often brings clear skies. This is because air moves down from high up. This sinking air dries out the air mass. Without clouds, the sun warms the ground during the day. At night, the heat escapes easily into space. This can make nights feel very cool.

Some highs are very large. The subtropical ridge is a warm high-pressure system. It helps make many of the world's deserts.

Another type is the Siberian High. It is a cold high-pressure system. It stays in one place for a long time. On weather maps, these centers are marked with the letter H.
