He used an early microscope to see the tiny details. Scientists also found very old fossils of lice. The oldest known fossil is called Archimenopon myanmarensis. This louse lived during the Cretaceous period in what is now Myanmar. Other fossils have been found in Germany and Russia.

Lice are also a part of human history. In the Middle Ages, lice were found almost everywhere in human society. Humans host three different kinds of lice. These are the head louse, the body louse, and the pubic louse. Some lice can even carry diseases like typhus. Because they are so small, we often use special combs or shampoos to get rid of them.

However, they are not found on all animals. They do not live on monotremes, pangolins, bats, or sirenians. They are also absent from tapirs, rhinoceroses, and the Whippomorpha group, which includes whales and hippopotamuses. Most lice spend their entire life cycle on a single host. If a host dies, some lice may use phoresis, which means hitching a ride on a fly to find a new home.

Scientists divide lice into two main functional groups based on how they eat. Sucking lice, or Anoplura, have narrow heads and oval, flattened bodies. They use specialized mouthparts to pierce the skin and drink blood or other secretions.

These mouthparts include a proboscis with a toothed tip and internal stylets. They also use a cibarial pump to help move fluids into their gut. Chewing lice, such as those in the suborder Ischnocera, act more like scavengers. They have wider heads and eat skin, hair, or feather debris.

Some chewing lice even host symbiotic bacteria in cells called bacteriocytes to help them digest food.

The life cycle of a louse is a precise process of growth and change. Female lice lay eggs, which are commonly called nits, onto the host's hair or feathers.

They use a specialized saliva to cement these eggs firmly in place. When the eggs hatch, the young are called nymphs. These nymphs are miniature versions of the adults. Another early example is Megamenopon rasnitsyni, a bird louse from the Eocene period in Germany, dating to 44 million years ago. Humans have also shared their history with lice for a long time. In the Middle Ages, lice were found everywhere in human society. They have even appeared in famous literature, such as James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake.

Humans are hosts to three specific types of lice. The head louse and the body louse are both subspecies of Pediculus humanus. The third type is the pubic louse, known as Pthirus pubis.

Lice can be significant to human health because they act as vectors for diseases like typhus. This means they can carry and spread germs from one person to another. Today, people manage these infestations using specialized lice combs or medicated shampoos.

Lice are found on every continent, even in the freezing Antarctic. In the Antarctic, penguins host 15 different species of lice. The number of lice on a host often depends on the size of the animal. Large birds often carry more lice than smaller birds. Interestingly, lice can affect how an animal stays warm. For example, heavy infestations of Ischnoceran lice can reduce the warmth provided by a bird's feathers. This makes it harder for the bird to regulate its body temperature.
